A Day in the Life of Mothering a Three-Month-Old

5:30 am — Baby wakes up and starts squirming and smacking her lips. Drowsy, I feed her until she falls back to sleep.

7:30 am — Baby wakes up and is hungry again. I feed her, then slip out of bed to pack lunch for her daddy.

7:50 am — Baby fusses. Not really crying, just complaining. I come back to bed and cuddle her into a morning nap. I listen to The Secret Garden audiobook and make the week’s menu and grocery list.

8:45 am — I manage to slip away without waking her up, and go make my breakfast and write a couple more baby shower thank-you notes.

9:00 am — Baby wakes up and fusses and eats again. I change her diaper and get her dressed, which she hates, and she screams the whole time.

9:10 am — I calm her down then lay her next to me on the bed and wrap her blankie around her. She stares at me happily while I do a little writing.

10:30 am — She fusses again and I feed her again. I try to put her down for another nap, but she won’t have it so instead I put her in her carseat.

11:15 am — She complains but doesn’t cry as I go through the ChickFilA drivethrough and grab some lunch.

11:30 am — We go to Walmart for a few things. She is quiet and just looks around as I order checks, get groceries, and take a peek at the baby section, where we find a panda shirt that says “Daddy loves me,” which we need.

12:00 pm — We go to ALDI. She is asleep when we get there, but wakes up in the store and looks around while I get the rest of the groceries. She starts to cry on the way home.

12:30 pm — I rush the cold things into the house and the fridge while she cries, then I sit on the couch and feed her and we listen to more of our audiobook.

1:00 pm — I change her diaper and lay down with her for a nap, and we both sleep for two hours.

3:00 pm — I wake up slowly and find her still asleep. I manage to sneak off and put away the rest of the groceries and do my devotions and journaling.

4:00 pm — She wakes up, hungry, and I feed her a bunch.

4:20 pm — I change into my exercise clothes and put her in the jogging stroller and we head out for a jog around the neighborhood.

4:50 pm — We get back home and I put her in the bouncy seat while I take a shower. She fusses.

5:10 pm — I pick her up and change her diaper and put her new shirt on. I feed her.

5:40 pm — We sit on the couch and play while we wait for Daddy to come home.

6:00 pm — Daddy gets home and sits with us. He likes her new shirt. He heats up some leftovers for his dinner.

6:15 pm — Baby starts crying. She refuses to eat or to take her pacifier or be comforted by any amount of walking or bouncing or cuddling.

6:30 pm — Her daddy takes her and tries to calm her while I get ready to go to our community group meeting. She keeps screaming.

6:40 pm — She finally calms down and gets sleepy after he swaddles her tight in her blankie and plays his favorite music on Spotify.

6:50 pm — She finally eats while her daddy gets ready to go.

7:10 pm — We put her in her carseat and head out. She quickly falls asleep in the car.

7:30 pm — We arrive at community and she wakes up. She is quiet through most of the meeting, just looking around while sitting in my lap.

8:30 pm — She fusses, so I get out my nursing cover and feed her. Then she sits quietly in my lap again.

9:30 pm — We say our goodbyes and leave. She is fussy in the car.

9:50 pm — She is asleep when we get home, so we let her sleep for a few minutes while we cuddle.

9:55 pm — She wakes up and sucks her fingers for a minute before starting to cry. I pick her up and feed her.

10:15 pm — I change her diaper, put lotion on her, and put her adorable footie PJs on. She screams because she hates having her diaper or clothes changed.

10:30 pm — I calm her down and feed her one more time while we watch I Love Lucy.

10:45 pm — I lay her down next to me for bed. Instead of sleeping though, she lies awake staring at me with her big eyes and talking to me in her sweet little coos and baby noises. I don’t mind. I just stare back and let her talk.

11:10 pm — She falls asleep, warm and cuddled, and we get ready for another day tomorrow.
