Find the Core of Your Story

logline book

We’ll be back with more of the Firmament: Radialloy blog tour soon, but for now, I have some exciting news!

Awhile back, I wrote a post about loglines.  I mentioned my friend Jordan and his wonderful logline advice.  Well now, I am happy to announce that Jordan has written and published a book that will help you find the heart of your story with a tidy, juicy little logline.

Finding the Core of Your Story is not only very informative and helpful, but it is an absolute delight to read.  Full of personable and down-to-earth humor, it will help you take your big, complicated story and represent it neatly in a sentence or two.  Each chapter ends with fun exercises that will have you happily loglining away in no time.  Never get stuck on the “What is your story about” question again!

In honor of the book’s release, I’m doing a giveaway contest for two spiffy ebook copies from Smashwords!  What kind of contest does one do to win a logline book?  Why, a logline contest, of course!

That’s right, you’re going to have to write a logline to win.  But not just any logline.  My fellow judges and I are going to get you started.  Aubrey Hansen and Lawrence Mark Coddington have agreed to help me judge the contest, and we each have a word for you to include:

My word is heartless

Aubrey’s word is revives

And Mark’s word is adventurer

Now, have some fun and enter the contest!  And don’t let your lack of logline knowledge stop you — we’ll be giving away one ebook copy to the winner of the contest, and the rest of the entries will be entered in a drawing to win the other copy.  So no matter what your logline is like, you could win the book, and learn how to do better at finding the core of your story!

The contest ends at noon CST on June 16th.  Post entries as a comment to this post, be creative, and have fun!

May the best logline win!

  1. This’ll be fun. Let’s see what you’ve got, guys! :D

  2. Varon says:

    A heartless adventurer wrestles with his ruthlessness when he revives a child and faces a challenges previously unknown to him, the innocence of a child.

  3. Lady Katharina says:

    Okay, here goes!

    As a heartless assassin chases him through the desert, an adventurer struggles to revive a dying man he meets along the way.

    (Does that work or does the word “revive” have to be in the plural form?)

  4. BushMaid says:

    A bored adventurer revives a princess in a faraway castle after hearing the tales of her enchanted sleep, but is unaware of the curse involved that renders her rescuer a stony, heartless being.

  5. Andrew says:

    I’ve already purchased the book (now to read it!), so don’t count this as an entry; but I thought I’d share it nonetheless =)

    “A heartless jungle chieftain revives a stranded adventurer who has crash-landed in the bush, only to attempt to sacrifice him to cannibals.”

  6. Jordan says:

    Hello! Author here! :-D

    Just wanted to pop in and thank Grace for the review and tell all the people entering that the entries so far have been great. Keep ‘em coming!

    Makes me want to write a logline for this thing, actually… But I won’t for fear of skewing the results. ;-)

  7. RSSharkey says:

    An exiled adventurer revives an orphaned girl he found on the street only to find out that she is a heartless murderer. (Ooo, scared myself with that one o.o)

  8. Lady Rwebhu says:

    * smacks excitedly * * thinks *

    * first one doesn’t get anywhere *

    * second one is too pointless *

    * sighs * * works harder *

    * third one is too gritty *

    * frustrated *

    I’ll come back to this….

  9. Laura says:

    Never written one of these before :D

    A monk-turned-adventurer revives a cruel and heartless prince, only to have the prince accuse him of treachery.

  10. After an infamous adventurer revives from an accident-induced coma with partial amnesia, his newfound faith is tested as his ruthless partners and heartless government agents both demand his help in obtaining the possibly illegal treasure he lost before the accident.

  11. Calista/Milly says:

    Wow I’m late! I hope I’m not too late, and I know this isn’t a very good logline, but here it is anyway…

    When blackmail involves her family and revives her passion for freedom, a restless girl must choose who she will trust – the reckless adventurer who promises his help, or the woman in her heartless mother’s power – before time runs out.
